Hiking the Fira to Oia Trail in Santorini: A Family Adventure
The Fira to Oia hike is one of Santorini’s most iconic experiences. Stretching approximately 6.4 miles (10.3 km) along the caldera rim, it offers postcard-perfect views, charming local encounters, and a chance to immerse yourself in the island’s unique volcanic beauty.
Our family recently tackled part of this trail—completing 4 of the 6.4 miles. Here’s a breakdown of what it was like hiking with four kids, how we prepared, what we learned (sometimes the hard way), and why we’d absolutely do it again.
Start at the Right Spot: Atlantis Hotel, Fira
Before diving into the trail itself, here’s something we wish we’d known sooner: the hike officially begins just past the Atlantis Hotel in Fira. You’ll find a paved pedestrian path lined with cafés and stunning views—this is the start of the Fira to Oia hike.
Do not rely on Google Maps or Apple Maps for the trailhead.
We made this mistake and it cost us dearly in time and energy.
Both apps led us on a wild goose chase through confusing back streets, adding unnecessary stress and delay to our morning. By the time we realized the error and backtracked to the real trailhead, we had already lost over an hour.
Lesson learned: Head straight to the Atlantis Hotel and walk north along the caldera. The moment the path opens to sweeping cliffside views, you’ll know you’re on the right track. The view of Fira on the cliffside is stunning beyond imagination!
A Late But Beautiful Morning
Our original plan was to start around 7:00 AM to beat the heat. But after our GPS misadventure and a slower-than-expected family morning, we didn’t begin until just after 9:00 AM. Fortunately, a steady morning breeze helped cool the rising sun, and spirits stayed high.
Though we shared the trail with other hikers, it rarely felt overly crowded. The wide, open views of the caldera and charming villages made every step worthwhile.

Why We Chose the Fira to Oia Direction
We hiked from Fira toward Oia, which is generally the more downhill and family-friendly route. With kids ranging in age, this direction made the most sense. Don’t get me wrong: you will still be hiking uphill plenty of times throughout the walk, its just arguably less than if you began in Oia and traveled to Fira!
Hydration & Supplies
To prepare for the heat and distance, we brought/bought:
- Six 2-liter bottles of water (and used every drop). We had two packed and stopped for the rest along the way!
- One Liquid I.V. per person (Important note: do not exceed one daily)
- Light snacks
- Sunscreen, hats, and proper footwear (I do not recommend attempting this in sandals as I saw many doing).
Even with this preparation, the trail grew hot as the day progressed. The breeze eventually faded, and our youngest began to tire near the four-mile mark.
Trail Highlights: What Made It Special
- Iconic Views: The sweeping caldera, cliffside chapels, and sparkling blue sea—this trail is Santorini at its most breathtaking.
- Lunch Stop at Pink Sophia Maria: A peaceful break along the trail. I enjoyed a fresh fruit bowl, and we all appreciated the quiet charm. I even snuck a bite of my daughter’s sandwich—delicious!
- An Unexpected Kindness: Near the Prophet Elias ascent, we met Nicolae, a kindhearted local who stopped his motorcycle to check on us. An hour later, we found him at the top of the hill—waiting with slices of juicy watermelon and a warm smile. It was a small act of generosity we’ll never forget.

How We Ended the Fira to Oia Hike
Rather than turning around, we stopped the hike at the four-mile point when the breeze vanished and our water ran low in an area with no shops nearby to replinish our supply. Our youngest was exhausted, and continuing didn’t feel safe or smart.
My husband, Don, called an Uber and returned to the start in Fira to pick up our rental car. The rest of us waited in a shaded area, cooling off and enjoying the views while we waited. Once Don returned, we headed back to our hotel and dove straight into the pool.
Later that evening, feeling refreshed, we drove to Oia a couple of hours before our 8:00 PM sunset dinner reservation—a perfect finale for the day!

Would We Do It Again?
Yes—without hesitation. Even though we didn’t complete all 6.4 miles of the Fira to Oia hike, the experience was deeply rewarding. The views, the trail, the people we met—it all left a lasting impression.
I plan to return and hike the entire trail from start to finish. But even a partial journey on this route is well worth it.

Tips for Hiking Fira to Oia with Kids
✅ Start at the Atlantis Hotel in Fira – this is the true trailhead
✅ Ignore Google/Apple Maps trailhead directions – they are incorrect
✅ Begin early – ideally by 7:00 AM in warm seasons
✅ Hydrate well – we drank over 12 liters
✅ Use electrolytes – Eletrolytes will provide more for your body than water alone in the heat. I recommend liquid IV or even a few pinches of sea salt in your water. Please note: It is unsafe to overconsume liquid IV, follow the guidelines on the box!
✅ Wear sturdy shoes – parts of the trail are uneven and steep
✅ Plan a flexible return – rideshares like Uber are available as well as public transportation. This is something you need to plan for unless you intend to hike back to the start!
✅ **Savor the Experience **- Take your time and really enjoy the views. There are numerous places to stop and just spend a few minutes taking it all in! Say hi to Nicolae for me if you happen to meet him on the trail!
Final Thoughts
The Fira to Oia hike was more than just a scenic walk—it was a shared adventure, full of surprises, challenges, and unforgettable moments. From stunning views and delicious lunch spots to watermelon shared by a stranger, the trail offered something beautiful at every turn.
We didn’t finish it this time, but we enjoyed every moment of the experience.
